Grandparent Custody

Helping Grandparents Assert Custody Of A Child In Need

When you became a grandparent, you probably envisioned afternoons at the playground and other fun. You never imagined you would be taking on the full-time care and financial burdens. But you can’t bear the alternative, so you are stepping up.

The law firm of Fifield Brown & Palmquist represents grandparents (and other relatives) who are petitioning the court for child custody. Whatever the circumstances, we are here to support you and advocate for the best interests of your grandchild. Our family law attorneys have extensive background with the Child Protective Services (CPS) system.

We practice in Travis, Williamson and surrounding counties of Central Texas. Call today to find out how we can help.

Experience And Compassion For Grandparent Custody

There are many scenarios where the court will grant child custody to grandparents/relatives on a temporary or permanent basis:

  • Death or incarceration of the custodial parent
  • Abandonment of the child
  • CPS intervention for child abuse or neglect
  • Indefinite custody while the parent seeks addiction or mental health treatment
  • Formalized custody by grandparents who are already raising the child as the de facto parents

In many cases, grandparents step forward to avoid removal of the child by CPS and placement in foster care. We have experience in all scenarios: grandparents assuming custody with the blessing of the parent(s) as well as contested custody cases in which the court must override the wishes of the parents to serve the best interests of the child. In either case, we recognize these are sensitive situations and we treat all the parties with compassion and respect.

In the custody hearing, we help grandparents demonstrate that they have the financial means, the capacity to fill the parental role, and a meaningful relationship with the child. In appropriate circumstances, we also pursue formal adoption of a child by the grandparents (or other relatives).

Keeping Families Together

Grandparent custody is family helping family (whether or not the help is welcome). We have experience in both CPS and non-CPS custody cases, and our lawyers have been recognized for their devout advocacy of children. Fifield Brown & Palmquist will guide you through the legal process and deal with the state and county agencies so you can focus on taking good care of your grandchild during this difficult transition.
